Galentine's Day vs Valentine's Day
Galentine's
Day, a nonofficial holiday, is celebrated as a day for "ladies celebrating
ladies." For the past 4 years, I’ve spent Valentine’s Day single. Eating pizza, ice cream,
and watching the classic movie “Some Like It Hot”. Last year, I was introduced to
Galentine’s Day which I wholeheartedly support over Valentine’s Day. “ladies
celebrating ladies” what’s not to appreciate about that? I remember playing
Cards Against Humanity with maybe 12 girls at this party and one blurts out that she once had
sex with a man who looked like Jesus and he gave her chlamydia. I died
laughing. This was a level above my usual Valentine’s Day experience and I
wasn’t going home disappointed. I'm sold. Galentine's Day has my heart. I
remember 7th Grade was the first real Valentine’s Day gift I received. Brad
Williams gave me a chocolate rose, card, and teddy bear. I LOVED it. High
School was a blur of meaningless chocolates and flowers. When I got in college,
I received a diamond necklace from my boyfriend. He had taped it inside a card and I was
completely taken off guard. Thinking I am going to marry this man… I mean he bought me
diamonds. *cue the sarcastic laugh I am
sorry to inform you…it was downhill from there. What is Valentine’s Day modeled
after anyways? I read
that the day’s earliest association is with love and fertility. A matchmaking
lottery would pair men and women up at a festival, and the men would slap women
with the hides of goats and dogs they had sacrificed, which was thought to make
the women fertile. Honestly, I am glad we have moved away from this. Presenting
me with chocolates may not make me fertile but it sure is a delicious treat. This
year consumers will spend roughly $16 billion on Valentine’s Day celebrations.
I contributed $50 to that. As I was chatting up with the local Walgreen's checkout attendant, she informed me that Valentine's Day was their second
busiest day next to Christmas. That is impressive. Now that
I am 30, I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. Now Galentines Day…
yassss ladies. Let’s whoop it up and celebrate us but Valentine’s Day...quite comical.
The expectation, the exaggeration, and let’s face it… fakeness really puts me
off. Love me year-round,
bro. Treat me right, year-round, bro. I am saying bro at the end of these
because it’s the bros who don’t do this and I seem to be attracted to the bros.
Yes, we all have flaws. I can buy myself chocolates and flowers. What I really
want is respect, honesty, and loyalty. Unfortunately, you can’t go buy those at
your local drugstore. Your vibe attracts your tribe and my gal
tribe is the best. -To the
gals. You are a true pineapple. Happy belated Galentine’s Day. KM
